You probably don't know Thomas McIntosh. Instead, you know Joc Max. And if you don't know Joc Max, you should.
A job as a case manager at a middle school — and a long history of badass beatmaking. He was just 9 when he first took music into his own hands, spinning Stevie Wonder, James Brown and classic rock when his relatives wanted to get down at family functions.
By 14, he had cut a song. It was called "Bust a Move" (and it busted a move on Young MC, who put out a hit single by the same name more than 10 years later). The song appeared on a compilation album of KC artists called KC Missouri Cityboys; McIntosh produced the track, and the Twin City Trio, ACAand Vell Bacardi did the rhymes.
McIntosh fell in love with hip-hop because he already loved soul, jazz, funk and rock, all genres that hip-hop radically combined into a new urban sound. McIntosh studied and deconstructed the music and taught himself how to make it.
"To me, the whole hip-hop thing came from extending the break," he explains. "That's what hip-hop DJs did. They'd take a break of an old soul record and get two copies and extend it. Basically, my making beats came from making tape loops — tape one part for five minutes and go over on the other tape, put another little piece on it for five minutes and just build this composition on tapes."
He "junkyarded" his equipment together from family discards but eventually saved enough money for a pair of Technics 1200s. Around this time, he took the name Joc Max, abbreviating the notion of, he says, "a disc jockey giving his maximum effort to the people."
National attention came in 1995, when he did a remix for the platinum-earning group Das EFX. Elektra released the single (which is now on McIntosh's MySpace page, www.myspace.com/jocmax). McIntosh had also become a producer for the Basement Khemists, with Taha (aka Brother Neves) and Jay Lee. The Khemists are legendary in underground hip-hop circles, but their records are hard to find, probably because even though they produced a record for Elektra, the label never released it. That didn't keep their music from getting out, though.
McIntosh remembers when their records started getting airplay in New York, birthplace of the traditional, true-school hip-hop to which the Khemists adhered.
"Pete Rock played one of our records ['Correct Techniques'] on Hot 97 on a show he had called Future Flavors of the '90s, and I feel like that was a shining moment for us as a group because we knew that we had finally won over," he says.
McIntosh built another bridge to New York through his friendship with Brooklyn's DJ Spinna, who had his own group, the Jigmasters, and made beats for '90s indie heroes like Talib Kweli and Mos Def. Spinna was dating a Kansas City girl, and one day he went into 7th Heaven, where McIntosh worked, though McIntosh was off that day.
"A co-worker of mine told him, 'Come back and meet Thomas,' so he came back and met me, and we kicked names of records that we enjoyed, artists that we enjoyed. One thing led to another, and he came to my mother's house, where I was staying at the time, and boom, there it was — love at first sound."
Over the next decade, McIntosh and Spinna would remain friends and collaborators, and McIntosh would continue to make music of his own — which, for the most part, rarely made it out to the public.
"I'm very, very self-conscious and very protective of my art," McIntosh says. His music is personal. "I developed my sound from just applying how I view life and putting it into my music." The drums beat out the hard times, he says, and the melodies key the good things in his life.
Stay tuned for a few new projects Joc will be releasing later this year including a new Basement Khemist record & various collaborations.

Franco de Leon is probably best known as a break dance (bboy) DJ, and is often referred to as the “b-boy equivalent of Girl Talk.” By introducing Chicago-style quick-mixing, mash-up, and live PA techniques to the music played during break dance competitions, and combining it with his thorough understanding of fundamental funk-breaks mixing, dj set building, and crowd reading, Franco de Leon’s reputation as a premiere name in B-boy Breaks Music quickly grew. He now regularly performs as the music headliner at major break dancing competitions throughout North America, at events like Montreal’s JFL-Battle-JPR, where the world’s greatest break dancers travel from around the globe to compete to his music selections. Franco de Leon has released five mixed CD compilations (including the amazingly popular Hot Butter Breaks Series) that continue to sell steadily to fans around the world, as well as creating choreography mixes for some of the breakdance culture’s most well known groups, such as Supercr3w, the winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew Season 2.
In Chicago, Franco de Leon is a regular feature of the nightclub scene, with several select shows a month. He can be found at some of the highest profile venues, and/or simply the hippest places to be: from parties in the uber-hip Wicker Park Area, to Chicago nightlife staples like Wrigleyville’s Smart Bar, to the new, super posh, live venues, like The Shrine in the burgeoning South Loop. Having garnered reputations as a the “DJ’s DJ”, its also common to see de Leon playing live guitar over his mixes, remixing music on the fly, and breaking the barriers of genre. He has opened for international stars like DJ Qbert (the pioneer of turntablism, who has twice requested to play tag team sets with de Leon in the last year), Derrick Carter (Chicago house legend), and Rhymefest (Grammy Award Winner).
While de Leon loves to perform as a DJ, most of his new fans first learn of him as music producer. Taking his years of studio experience as a record engineer, where he worked for the likes of John Popper (Blues Traveler, Grammy Award Winner), Rhymefest (Grammy Award Winner), Just Blaze (Grammy Award Winner, Hip Hop Producer for Jay-Z), and Malik Yusef (Grammy Award Winner), he is cultivating a growing following in several different genres, including Electronic, Dance, and Hip Hop/Rap. This can be heard on 2009’s CD release, From Here to There, an EP that showcases different studio work created over the last four years.
Franco de Leon also performs Live PA by combining turntablism, guitar, keyboard, MPC drum pads, a laptop, and his ability to remix music live. He creates non-stop dj-style sets where he recreates his original music, live on stage – much like RJD2 meets Girl Talk meets J.U.S.T.I.C.E. meets Santana.
Franco de Leon has extensive experience as a composer and sound designer, with credited work for film, television, live theater, fashion shows and web productions, as well as session-musician work for various artists. His client list is extensive, and includes entities such as NBC Television’s Taste Television Program, to Merrel Clothing’s Spring Fashion Show, to multiple productions at The Steppenwolf Theater (home of ensemble members Jon Malkovich and Gary Sinise).
Beyond his live performance and music production, Franco de Leon still enjoys competition. He has placed highly, either as a finalist or semi-finalist, in a slew of music remix and production competitions, including events such as Red Bull’s International Beat Battle and Lollapalooza’s Last Band Standing Contest.

5 TIPS FOR GETTING BOOKED AT SMART BAR
We here at Smart Bar receive numerous inquiries every week from hard-working DJs looking for an opportunity to play. While we certainly entertain every possibility that comes in (some longer than others), there are a few things that YOU can do to up your chances of getting booked for a weekend opening slot. Follow these guidelines and you’ll be downing shots of Jameson in the booth in no time.
1) Don’t Suck. – This may seem like a very elementary concept, but many people underestimate how far something like talent goes. A big part of our vision with Smart Bar is to showcase and assist in the furthering of our local and regional DJ’s careers and as such, we always look for the most talented and deserving DJs we can find. A creative, well-programmed mix made with solid, well-timed transitions will go a long way towards convincing our talent buyer.
2) Make Yourself Visible.- And by that we do not necessarily mean send us e-mails and Facebook messages and stuff to make sure we got your demo. Most of the people that get booked for opening slots here are DJs that are on our radar- people who are getting booked with other headliners around town, people that are putting out mixes or podcast episodes consistently or are throwing some great parties themselves. Part of what makes our job so fun is the aspect of seeking out new talent and booking the club as a reflection of what’s going on in our city and our world-wide dance culture. If you a) show that you are a viable and valued part of our scene and are making strides to further it and b) show that you are doing everything you can to promote yourself and further your OWN DJ career, we’ll most likely be calling you.
3) Give Us A Good Demo/Press Packet.- The absolute best way for you to get us demos is by sending us 2 links- one to your Soundcloud account with all of your awesome mixes (INCLUDING TRACKLIST!!!!!) and a link to your Myspace/FB page with your BIO and a list of CONFIRMED gigs that you have played in the past and are playing in the near future. Please include any pertinent info, including releases you have out and on which labels, any regular nights you have done in the past and other gigs in which you have opened for other headliners. And please, pretty please… USE SPELL CHECK. If you send us a CD and the jacket also happens to be the cover letter, which is sealed around the CD with a bunch of tape, and there are horrible grammar and spelling mistakes all over it, we usually throw it out.
4) PROMOTE! If you get booked somewhere and you bring in 20-30 people (especially before midnight, while you are playing), that WILL get noticed and you’ll probably get asked back. Don’t be afraid to see if there’s some sort of discount list you can get to help promote the night and get people in the door. Every person that comes in to see you play is also a person that spends cash at the bar and adds to the general vibe of the night so the better it is for us, the better it is for you.
5) Remember- IT’S JUST A CLUB NIGHT. Ego is the one thing that can destroy the career of any artist, be they a musician, DJ, superstar hip-hop producer, promoter, label owner or whatever. We’re here to have fun, rock out, listen to good music, learn about new artists, drink, dance, get laid (or at least try), spend time with our friends and piss away our hard-earned dollars on a great night of hijinx and hoob-boobery. 1) Don’t Suck. – This may seem like a very elementary concept, but many people underestimate how far something like talent goes. A big part of our vision with Smart Bar is to showcase and assist in the furthering of our local and regional DJ’s careers and as such, we always look for the most talented and deserving DJs we can find. A creative, well-programmed mix made with solid, well-timed transitions will go a long way towards convincing our talent buyer.
2) Make Yourself Visible.- And by that we do not necessarily mean send us e-mails and Facebook messages and stuff to make sure we got your demo. Most of the people that get booked for opening slots here are DJs that are on our radar- people who are getting booked with other headliners around town, people that are putting out mixes or podcast episodes consistently or are throwing some great parties themselves. Part of what makes our job so fun is the aspect of seeking out new talent and booking the club as a reflection of what’s going on in our city and our world-wide dance culture. If you a) show that you are a viable and valued part of our scene and are making strides to further it and b) show that you are doing everything you can to promote yourself and further your OWN DJ career, we’ll most likely be calling you.
3) Give Us A Good Demo/Press Packet.- The absolute best way for you to get us demos is by sending us 2 links- one to your Soundcloud account with all of your awesome mixes (INCLUDING TRACKLIST!!!!!) and a link to your Myspace/FB page with your BIO and a list of CONFIRMED gigs that you have played in the past and are playing in the near future. Please include any pertinent info, including releases you have out and on which labels, any regular nights you have done in the past and other gigs in which you have opened for other headliners. And please, pretty please… USE SPELL CHECK. If you send us a CD and the jacket also happens to be the cover letter, which is sealed around the CD with a bunch of tape, and there are horrible grammar and spelling mistakes all over it, we usually throw it out.
4) PROMOTE! If you get booked somewhere and you bring in 20-30 people (especially before midnight, while you are playing), that WILL get noticed and you’ll probably get asked back. Don’t be afraid to see if there’s some sort of discount list you can get to help promote the night and get people in the door. Every person that comes in to see you play is also a person that spends cash at the bar and adds to the general vibe of the night so the better it is for us, the better it is for you.
5) Remember- IT’S JUST A CLUB NIGHT. Ego is the one thing that can destroy the career of any artist, be they a musician, DJ, superstar hip-hop producer, promoter, label owner or whatever. We’re here to have fun, rock out, listen to good music, learn about new artists, drink, dance, get laid (or at least try), spend time with our friends and piss away our hard-earned dollars on a great night of hijinx and hoob-boobery. Vinyl may have been overtaken by CDs and downloads but it still has its passionate fans. The vinyl factory in Hayes, Middlesex, the last major plant in the UK, still presses about 25,000 records a week

I still love seeing records.. especially ones that I also have. There is a story that goes with each & everyone. How I obtained it, how i discovered, the quest..
I do miss traveling across the city or even across states to find a secret stash in someone's basement. There are a ton of records that I can not even imagine parting with.
The feeling you get when you finally get your hands on that one.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Patrick Wayne was introduced to House Music while it was still in its infancy through radio stations WGCI and most notably WBMX quickly gaining an interest in what would become almost an obsession. After receiving his first DJ setup in 1986 and after putting on that first record, Patrick has never looked back.
Being influenced by some of the best DJs in the business, Patrick knew his skills had to be sharp if he wanted to make a name for himself. “All I used to do after school was come home and get on the turntables and practice until I had to go to bed”
In 1993 Patrick held a Saturday night residency at a local northern Illinois nightclub when one of the main DJ’s that influenced him walked through the doors. “I remember thinking…I have to show this guy what I got…so I started doing a couple little tricks and did some scratching…” It worked. “He came to the booth, asked who I was and gave me some respect…that felt awesome.”
A year later, he discovered that that same DJ he wanted to impress, opened a record store. So through hanging out, he became a member of one of the most respected DJ crews in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, The Mixxmobb, and from 1996 until 2000, he released several extremely well selling mixtapes under the name Opie “Kuttingham” and eventually became general manager of the record store. Fast forward to 2005, after leaving the retail world, Patrick got into producing, and a friend of his was starting a digital only label called Immense Records. “I got into producing because I always thought of that being the ‘next level’ after DJing…and it has always been something ive wanted to do since the 80’s” Eventually Patrick was given his own label as a sub label of Immense called Content Recordings, but when Immense closed down, Content became a whole new project. “I was doing everything myself besides producing some of the tracks…I was A&R, graphic designer, accountant…it was definitely a one man show” The label got to become more of a headache and I was trying to wear too many hats, so I decided that January 1st 2010, it was time to close it down.
Since closing Content, Patrick has went on to work with local labels Bid Muzik, Direct Drive Digital, and Vibrance Recordings from the west coast to international labels Nocturnal Recordings and Deep 8 Records from the UK and Pro Sound Records from Holland and can be found on mostly all of the mp3 stores.
Patrick’s new single, “Soul Power” is set to release on Nocturnal Recordings in July 2010.
